Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers Amid Eviction Operation in Italy
Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property close to the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area displayed the property left as a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.
Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings set off the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed local news, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
